10. Let's talk

Footsteps echoed against the stone floor, but Arthur didn't bother to look up to see who had stopped in front of his cell. He had not moved since that early morning they had thrown him into that sad dungeon at sunrise. He had been running and wandering aimlessly all night. In the end it had almost been a relief that the police found him. Almost, because he felt totally empty.

– We have deduced by now that you are a time traveler– his gravelly voice pierced her bones. And, although we are not very clear about your relationship with all this, I must admit that you have been quite good for us. I guess good old idealistic Peter did die in the fire after all. We wouldn't have anyone to blame if you weren't here.

Arthur didn't say anything, he didn't have to, he wasn't going to change anything, to undo what had happened.

– Did you really think that your ridiculous plan to expose us would work out? What did you think? That you would live happily ever after with her?

– It doesn't matter anymore – nothing mattered without Lily.

He looked up. Facing him, on the other side of the bars, was a man in a heavy black coat. In the tie that the opening of his allowed to distinguish he wore a pin with a golden spider. Arthur had never hated anything in his life the way he hated that little insect. The man's calm, smug expression didn't quite hurt him, really affect him, as he continued to speak.

– In case you were wondering what's going to happen next, you're going to stay here. You are going to trial. The families of the victims deserve justice, they deserve that those responsible for the deaths of their loved ones pay to heal their wounds. You will be sentenced to death by hanging– Arthur regretted many things. He didn't bring real justice to his great-grandfather, Charlie, Rhys, or Taylor was one of many. If you mention "the Spider"... at best our lawyers and the prosecutor will have you declared insane and if you provoke us further... let's just leave it at that hanging from the gallows is not the worst death you can have.

With that last threat he walked away, leaving him again with thoughts about her, alone.
